-- about everyone has endured some sort of food poisoning at some point in their life, but it'll take more than clear liquids and bed rest to recover from these toxins.

Ricin.

No, this isn’t found at your favorite Chinese restaurant. It’s found in the castor oil plant, which is also commonly used as decoration. Ricin is a protein that affects cells’ protein builders, leading to organ damage.

The Silent Killer.

This next toxin could be found in your home, but you might not know it until it’s too late. Carbon monoxide is responsible for 20 to 30 thousand accidental poisonings and approximately 500 deaths, making it one of the most common types of air poisonings.

Cyanide.

Deemed one of the most fast-acting toxins, cyanide can kill in a few short minutes. Cyanide is available in a gas or solid form, both of which are extremely toxic.

Toxic Pesticide.

Sarin was developed to be used as a pesticide in Germany in the early 1900s, but it turned out to be a deadly biological weapon that’s 26 times more deadly than cyanide.

Asbestos.

We’ve all see the commercials: If you or a loved one has died due to an asbestos-related illness, call now. I’m not sure how you’re going to call if you’re dead, but I digress. Asbestos isn’t one poisonous substance...it’s the name for a large group of minerals that are all comprised of bunches of fibrous crystals.

Poisonous Shrooms.

If you’ve kept up with the news lately, you’ve probably seen the sad sad story of a three-year-old boy that died from ingesting a Death Cap mushroom. The Death Cap mushroom he ingested contains Amatoxin, a type of toxin that naturally occurs in several varieties of mushrooms.

Tetro-Don’t-Toxin.

This next poisonous substance could be on your favorite Japanese menu. Tetrodotoxin, commonly found in some varieties of fish, crabs, and shellfish, is one of the most toxic substances, but the problem is that there isn’t an antitoxin for this poison.

Frogs Don’t Just Give You Warts.

Poisonous creatures aren’t just found in the sea...they’re also found in the rainforest. The poison dart frog contains the toxin, batrachotoxin.

Arsenic.

Of course, we can’t leave this old-timey toxin off this list. Arsenic was extremely popular during the Victorian era.

TCDD is a deadly toxin created in nature and in labs.

Digitalis is plant that’s commonly found in some cardiac medications, such as digoxin, to regulate the heartbeat and treat heart failure.

Polonium-210 is a slow-killing radioactive substance that’s most commonly known for killing Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Botox Could Kill You.

The ultimate killer on this list is something you may be exposed to regularly...Botox. It’s the most toxic substances found in nature.

-- knows the earth has been around long before us and will continue to thrive long after us, but what some don’t know is that some animals have existed way before the dinosaurs were ever around and that we have a surprisingly short lifespan compared to a lot critters that walk this earth despite the fact that humans are at the top of the food chain.

First, let’s take a look at which critters have been around the longest.

.

Coelacanth

Despite their fish-like appearance, these fish are actually more closely related to reptiles and mammals than their ray-finned fish ocean roommate.

Horseshoe Crab

This next oldest critter on earth is also known as a living fossil as it hasn’t really evolved at all since it’s made its appearance on earth. The horseshoe crab was known as one of the longest living creatures, dating back to 345 million years ago.

Nautilus

The nautilus is another creature that’s considered to be a living fossil. These molluscs have been around for 500 million years and seen all the major mass extinction events. Somehow, they’ve managed to survive them, but the threat to their existence is still very real.

Jellyfish

If you’ve ever been to an aquarium or zoo, you’ve probably seen these angelic-like sea critters floating around without a care in the world. Even though land animals didn’t exist half a billion years ago, jellyfish did.

Sponge

No, we aren’t talking about the germ-ridden piece of foam sitting in your kitchen sink…although, let’s face it, that’d probably survive global mass extinction too. We’re talking about sea sponges, and yes, they are technically an animal.

Next, join us as we uncover some of the critters with the longest lifespans!

Macaws

These gorgeous tropical birds are a popular choice for bird lovers as they are highly intelligent and social, but if you don’t want your pet outliving you, you might want to spring for a puppy instead. Macaw is actually a classification of birds that covers six species.

African Elephant

Elephants don’t just have an impressive memory. They also have an impressive lifespan. Deemed the largest surviving land animal, African elephants can live up to 70 years old, and recent findings suggest that female African elephants can stay fertile until their time on planet earth is up.

Galapagos Giant Tortoise

Given their reputation for being one of the longest living animals, it’s no surprise to see them on this list. The Galapagos Giant Tortoise, which can weigh up to 919 pounds, is the largest species of tortoise...and this tortoise can actually outlive you by a landslide.

Koi Fish

These brightly colored fish are commonly kept as a decoration in ponds and water landscaping projects, but Koi also have the potential to outlive you, your children, and possibly even your grandchildren.

Jellyfish

No, you’re not experiencing deja vu....jellyfish are one of the oldest species to ever live on Earth, but one species of jellyfish is also deemed immortal. The Turritopsis Dohrnii jellyfish essentially has no life expectancy.

It’s fascinating to look at something today and know that it was living on the Earth millions of years ago even before the dinosaurs. It’s also intriguing to learn about the lifespans of animals that can live way beyond our own years. What are your thoughts on our list of longest living creatures? Tell us about it in the comments below!

-- warms the heart like seeing two otherwise biologically incompatible animals cuddle it out. Whether the cat looks after her hamster friend or the dog babysits a flock of parakeets, these unlikely friendships are sure to make even the toughest, emotionless person gush with happiness.

Shere Kahn the tiger, Leo the lion, and Baloo the bear have been inseparable since their rescue. Upon inspection of a drug dealer’s home in Atlanta, police found a lion cub, a bear cub, and a tiger cub that appeared to be kept as pets, but the owner was anything but loving as the three 2-month-old creatures were in horrible condition with the bear requiring surgery to remove a harness that had imbedded into his skin.

No Pork Chops on This Big Cat’s Menu

This mother tiger and her so-called cubs came together after a tragic incident at a zoo in Thailand. The tiger gave birth to three premature tiger cubs, and they passed away shortly after birth, which devastated the tigress.

From African Safari to Barnyard Friend

This unlikely pair came together when an orphaned baby elephant was in need of companionship. Themba the elephant was orphaned at 6 months old when his mother fell down a cliff and died. After his rescue, he refused to nurse from a bottle, so the rehabilitation center introduced him to a Albert the sheep.

Deer Friend

This pair also came together in a desperate time of need. A mother goose laid eggs inside a cemetery urn in New York. Normally, both parent geese make an effort to hatch the eggs, but she was a single mother doing it all on her own. Seeing her desperate need of protection, a local buck began guarding her and her nest, putting himself in harm’s way so that the mother wasn’t stressed out and so that the eggs went untouched by predators. Like any great adoptive father, he stood guard even after they hatched to keep the crows away from the helpless baby birds. Even though one walks on two legs and the other walks on four, this deer crossed the normal biological lines to help out a feathered friend.

The Cat and The Hound

Sahara the Cheetah and Alexa the shepherd dog are proof that you don’t have to fight like cats and dogs. This duo came to be best friends when they were introduced in the Cincinnati Zoo’s Cat Ambassador Program.

The Tortoise and The Hippo

This unlikely pair bonded right when an orphaned baby hippo needed it most. Owen the hippo, named after his rescuer, was retrieved from a coral reef shortly after a tsunami washed out him and his herd members, leaving him stranded.

Some animal just know when others are in need and how to take care of them. That’s just what this dog does. The South African Labrador Lisha has taken care of a plethora of wild animals such as cheetah cubs, pigs, a hippo, and even an owl.

A couple in Massachusetts witnessed the unlikely friendship between a crow and a kitten. After seeing someone toss a kitten over their fence, the couple began feeding her from a distance. They quickly noticed that they weren’t the only ones looking after her.

Honorable Mentions

Torque the dog and Shrek the owl came together when Shrek was removed from her mother after three days due to safety concerns. Torque adopted her as his own and never lets her out of his sight.

Jet the dolphin and Miri the seal became friends when they were introduced at a young age. In the wild, these two would normally be competing for food, but instead, they look beyond their natural instincts and greet each other when Miri walks past Jet’s enclosure.

Finding an abandoned fawn in her yard, Isobel Springett swooped up the abandoned baby deer and placed her in her Great Dane’s dog bed where the two cuddled the remainder of the night.
