-- Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus literally translates as "water on the brain". It is a condition where cerebrospinal fluid accumulates excessively within the brain, usually due to a birth defect, although can also be acquired later in life. Because babies' skulls are still soft and malleable, this accumulated water causes their heads to expand, sometimes reaching extreme sizes.

9. Conjoined Twins

All identical twins were once one single zygote inhabiting a womb. Then it somehow split, and developed into two separate individuals sharing the same genetic code. But in some cases, these zygotes fail to separate completely, and would go on to become what we know as conjoined twins. The phenomenon is actually quite rare, and half of all cases end up as stillbirths.

8. Ectopia Cordis

Ectopia Cordis is a condition where someone is born with their heart either partially, or completely outside the body. This is caused by a defective front body wall formation during embryonic development.

7. Ambras Syndrome

Ambras Syndrome, also called hypertrichosis, and informally known as werewolf syndrome in extreme cases. Due to a genetic anomaly, sufferers end up excessively growing thick hair all over, particularly on the face.

6. Harlequin Ichthyosis

Icthyosis is a genetic skin condition characterized by dry, thick, and flaky skin. There are many different subtypes with a wide range of severity, but the worst one of all is the extremely rare harlequin type.

5. Mermaid Syndrome

In 2004, Milagros Cerron was born with her two legs joined together, making it appear as a mermaid's tail. The little girl from Peru suffered a condition known as Sirenomelia, also known as Mermaid Syndrome. Not only were her legs fused from groin to ankles, but her digestive, urinary tracts and genitals also shared a single tube, and her kidneys were underdeveloped.

4. Polymelia

Polymelia is the condition of having extra limbs. The bizarre disorder could be caused by a number of different reasons; such as the body splitting wrongly during fetal development, or a case of degenerated conjoined twin leaving behind an extra limb or two on their other twin.

3. Hutchinson Gilford progeria syndrome

Hutchinson Gilford progeria syndrome, or simply progeria, is a debilitating disease that causes its sufferers to age at an extremely rapid rate. The disease is a result of a genetic mutation, and is rarely inherited as the carriers usually don't even live long enough to reproduce.

2. Congenital insensitivity to pain

Feeling pain might be annoying, but it's a necessary sensation we all take for granted. Not feeling pain can be life threatening in many situations, as proven with the case of those born with CIPA, or congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis.

1. Cyclopia

Cyclops, the giant monster of Greek mythology might be a work of fiction, but there is a real life medical condition with traits similar to that of the one eyed beast. Cyclopia is a disorder related to genetic problems or toxins, usually caused by harmful teratogenic drugs or plants ingested by the pregnant mother
